    Posted: 06/13/2012 at 8:09pm
I would like to install a trim sender on my new to me motor. It is a 2004 Mercury 90hp 2-stroke with serial # OT958205. I have looked everywhere and I can't find one for it. I know they have to make one for it I'm just not sure which one it is. Has anyone else come across this before and possibly found one? Thanks!!

One that year is almost a given, raise the motor all the way up and look again (take a pic underneath and show us), should see something like a round object with one or two wires. Rick has a pic of it somewhere on the forum.

If not, part number 821400A2 should be the one.

Located on the inside of the Port side motor bracket. Need to tilt the lower unit up to see it.

Thanks for the help!! I'll have to check and see if it is on there. I just know on the 2004 50hp they didn't come from the factory. They must have included them with the bigger models. Thanks again.

Well after getting the new motor mounted on the boat I was a little worried once I didn't seen the brn/whi wire under the hood that I needed to hook up for the trim gauge. So it looks like I'm going to be investing in a sender. I have had a couple people tell me that I "probably" needt he a2 part but I have yet to be able to get a definite answer on it. I'm just trying to keep from having to jump through the hoops usually present when trying to return things. Thanks for the help!

After doing a lot more looking today, it appears there isn't an option for a trim sender for my motor. I know that sounds really weird, but with Mercury doing a check for my serial # it doesn't show an option for one. I'm not sure where else to turn at this point. SURELY they made one for it....Didn't they???

I saw the picture and the post and Rick stated that it "should" be the one. However, when my serial # is used for parts look up through Mercury, it doesn't list one as it does with other years. So I was just hoping someone could confirm that this is indeed the exact part that I need.

they make one for the right side and one for the left side.  just check which side yours mounts on and you should be good.

That's true. Could be on either side or even in the middle depending on the trim pump used. Since a Mercury dealer (I'm guessing that's who you called) couldn't find one, then there may be none that will fit.

Asking at a different source. Hopefully will have an answer in a day or so on whether it's possible to install one..

Well I couldn't take the suspense any longer so I went out and uncovered the boat and trimmed up the motor and there is a place for one on the starboard side. It looks just like a2 part as the holes are pre drilled and there is a pin with a slotted head for the mechanism to fit in to. So I'm thinking it would be a safe bet to go ahead and buy the sender.

just keep in mind that crowley tacks on a min of $10 shipping regardless if it weighs as much as a paper clip - so ALWAYS compare with shipping costs.

Don't want to highjack this thread but does anyone know where the sending/position unit wire hooks up?  I have the same sending unit under my 90hp Merc and it has a brown wire on it with the water proof wire coupler on it but for the life of me I can't find were it would plug into to run to the gauge.  Took cover off to check the trim solonoids and found it not hooked up.  And I thought it was not working becasue my trim motor burned up.

Since its still listed question.  I have a black, red and brown wire coming from the front that is in a wrap by itself.  I thinking its the control run for the gauges.  Been searching all over for a wiring diagram.  I bought this boat used and the brown wire is going to ground on the battery with a after market connector.  Could this be by chance the trim gauge wire I'm looking for?
