Hello. I am in the planning stages of restoring/ rebuilding a 1986 Weeres pontoon. I recently bought a used 1992 Mercury 40hp outboard. It came with good controls and tilt/trim. It weighs about 175lbs. The transom I have on the pontoon is an adjustable unit. It seems in decent shape for how old it is, and it had no problem handling the 25 hp Johnson that used to power the boat. My question is; can I hang this new motor on the transom? I realize I'll have to modify it a bit to accommodate the larger area of the new motor's plate. Should I replace it with a new aluminum pod? Cheapest I can find s $450. Are there any cheaper options? Any help with my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! Here's a pic of the transom:

I have not seen one like that either. maybe factory or homemade. I would build a better one if you cannot find a true motor pod.

It's factory.  I still see them from time to time.  How ever I have no experience at all with them.  These are usually seen with 15-20hp motors on them, so you might want to do some searching and try to guess how much more weight you will be adding.

Well I'm going to find out here soon. Our 20' Sylvan has the same transom. I just rebuilt it and am going to hang a 1962 Johnson 40hp on it.

I have an older Crest II 25ft that I picked up for parts and it has a very similar lift on it.
Sure looks like it came from the manufacturer that way.  The tag say's the toon is rated for
85hp.  I am going to pull it and install on a 16ft Bass Buggy.  I love fishing for gills when they
are on their beds and my current 24 footer with same type lift is just to clumsy in the shallow
stumpy lilly infested waters where the gills bed.  All my toons since the 70's have had this style
lift and have worked great for me.  I have only owned 1 toon with the tunnel and it had the Lake
Michigan 24inch pontoons.  Kept it only 2 years and got rid of it.  Never could get the trim adjusted for high speed then work in the shallows to my liking.  Besides that I could never get pontoon loaded on
either one of my sizzor lift trailers to my liking either.  Motors I used were 48hp Evinrude 50hp Merc and
even and old v4 65hp Evinrude (wish I never had got rid of that one) and never had any problems.
  Just my two cents worth.
