I would suggest NO.  Here is some great proof of what happens when you try to save a few bucks on an item that should not be skimped on.  These pictures show the repaired welds on a mid-80s San Pan.  The previous owner re-decked it just a few years ago with 5-ply 5/8" Pressure Treated plywood from the local big box store.  While the wood looked fine, and was not rotten or water logged any where it was extremely soft and weak.  This allows the boat to "twist" as it crosses the waves, and in turn all for corners of the pontoon had cracks where the risers are welded to the toons.  Both toons had water in them.  Don't skimp.  Do it right the first time and you will be much happier down the road!
