    Posted: 07/09/2013 at 10:11pm
just picked up this 1995 Suncruiser.  For its age, she is in pretty good shape.  I am not super handy, but want to work on a few things.

1) As you can see in the interior photos, there are a few rips and some tears on the upholstery.  The big one I just want to sew or something...  The many small ones i was wondering if there was a type of filler that would help them not get any larger.  I am not in the market to replace the seats, just want to prevent them from getting any worse.  Any ideas?
2) I plan to replace the tape deck and speakers, but I would think I could figure that out without too many troubles I would hope.
3) I added a 70 lb thrust trolling motor as the lake we live at is electric motor only.  I still want to take it to the Illinois River or another no HP limit lake to use the 90 HP Johnson.  I havent fired it up since the guy I got it from hooked it up to earmuffs to show it worked.  I will need to do some research on what oil is needed, would i need to drain and replace the gas, stuff like that...
4) I have been to and called everywhere in central Illinois to get a spare key made.  Gosh this is not easy!...even the Lowe place doesnt have the # key I have... ugh..

Thanks for your feedback and time helping me get my new boat looking good!

Be patient, you have come to the right place. The members here are just waiting to help someone.
It looks like you have a great starter boat there. As far as the aupolstery goes, I can't help you as I don't know much, but someone will chime in and help soon.

a good locksmith should be able to make a spare key! on the seats the big rip will need to be sewed. on the small there is a vinyl repair kit that you can get (Wal-Mart has them)that should help to keep them from getting bigger. other than that I would say use white duct tape     nice toon

Check ebay for a spare key.  A lot of them are the same.  A lock smith won't be able to do it if he doesn't have the blank for it, and I doubt many would.  Or go to a marina and have them order one ($$$).  IMO, when your seats get to that point there's no saving them.  The vinyl and thread are now dry and rotten and will only get worse.  I agree with the duct tape tip.  White duct tape and some beach towels go a long way to let you get out and enjoy the boat!

Feel free to contact me for help on your project!

lol...that's my sister boat....same colors, same layout. my stripes are different.  It is a solid boat.

Looks like they have replaced the original console with newer unit.

I carefully unscrewed the first seat, when I lifted it up I crushed it in my arms because it was so rotten.  I just ripped the rest of the seats straight off the floor, then cleaned up the screws.  I now roll w/o any seats.

I recently finished adding a bar, new carpet and changed the railing layout to move it forward.  The carpet is rubber backed.  It will not come off the floor easily.  I spent 30 hours with a belt sander to get the green fuzz off.  If I were to do it again I would replace the plywood with new.  BTW the carpet under the seats is more vivid shade of teal. It will be VERY apparent where your old seats were.

I painted my stripes with spray paint to change the colors to Orange and bought an orange bimini on ebay.

I put a "new" 2003 Johnson on it last year.  It was new in the box but had set at the dealer for 10 years, zero hours.

It probably has a VRO pump...I think that stands for Variable Rate Oiler...I would unhook that immediately....19 year old VRO is unreliable.  Mix your gas in the tank 50:1 and you will never worry. Don't forget the blue Stabil ethanol treatment as well.

My dealer unhooked mine for $50.

The VRO pump/ and tank will be port side, under the sundeck, next to the battery

Thanks for the feedback.  I bought some "Tear Aid" from Bass Pro Shop for the big seam rip.  I havent used it yet, but it looks like clear duct tape, should hopefully be a good fix for now.  I have taken the boat out 3 or 4 times so far and the trolling motor works great.  I hope to go to a bigger lake and use the outboard soon, but will need to research that as I am not sure how the oil deal works (I know there was a suggestion to remove that, but will check into that later).

My project now is to replace the tape deck and speakers.  I bought a new marine deck (radio with USB and aux port) that came with 4 speakers.  The only way to access the back of the tape deck is through the 2 cup holder holes.  I think I may need help as the wiring doesnt match up with the new deck....  Is there anything on this site to assist with this?

Thanks!

might have to unbolt the console.  Typically there is a removable panel.  How about a few pictures of just the console

Hey Lando.  Last night I was actually able to figure most of it out, with a buddies help.  I was able to get to it from the two cup holders, but we did notice that the top of the console is pretty much velcro'ed on.  We cut off the wiring harness from the old deck and spliced them to the new wiring harness and then plugged them into the clips under the console.  It works, although I think I need to replace the fuse line.  Now I need to figure out how to mount it properly and figure out how to avoid it from getting stolen when it is sitting in my front yard.

Here is a photo of the fuse that I think I need to replace:

Just a wiggle will shut off the deck.  It is either loose or the connections are corroded.

I really like that console, looks awsome. Chances are the contacts in the fuse conections are corroded if the fuse was blown it wouldn't work at all.

Thanks, I am guessing it is aftermarket.  I plan on getting some contact cleaner and seeing if that fixes the issue, otherwise I will just replace the fuse assembly, shouldn't be too expensive.

Got the stereo in and am rockin'!  I purchased a universal cover to protect it from water and weather, but it doesnt fit and I can't really cut the hole bigger so it could fit.  I got it at Bass Pro Shop (sorry PS, but its so hard since they are so close by..but I do plan on buying some goodies here too).  I am going to return it and just hope it doesnt get damaged.

We have a 2012 Chevy Captiva (Saturn Vue remake) to haul our pontoon.  I really really need to trade my car in for a good truck because the Captiva isnt exactly a powerhouse.  She gets the job done on our local lake we go to, but when we want to take it 50+ miles I am a little scard.  The Captiva will get it there, but in and out of the water could be a challange if the ramp is steep.  Anyone else use a vehicle that may not be enough for their pontoon? Ouch

oh and the new stereo works fine now...contact cleaner and sandpaper on the contacts and a new fuse did the trick!  I got a water/sun cover, but it is too big for the console and I dont have enough room to cut and make it bigger, so gonna take that back to the store.

This site here is a product that alot of us have used on our pontoon tubes. Read through it, and it will cover almost everything you will want to know. Once you have the logs or tubes the way you want them, protect them with Sharkhide it last a long time. (found here)

fatdaddy - first off great restore..I wish I had the know-how and resources/tools to do all of that!  I skimmed all 7 pages and saw early on the Supreme Coil Cleaner.  It looks more like a paint job than a shine...later on you talk about the other stuff you did to them and how much time it took.  What exactly does the coil cleaner do?

PS-Guy - i have seen that stuff referenced on other pages of the forum.  What exactly does that do?  Is it more a cleaner and protectant and not so much "make it look like a mirror?  Are there any before and after photos from using soley that stuff?  Thanks!
