Well, I am rebuilding our pontoon on a budget of course.
So far I have reupholstered the seats and 3/4 of the sun deck. Still need to do the seat backs and other 1/3 of the sun deck. They are in okay shape so those will be the last project.
I am going to replace the carpet and the side panels. Not sure if I will simply repair and paint, or replace the panels yet.
I plan on doing a re-wire of the pontoon so that its not such a mess under the console. But before doing that I want to make sure I know where all the wires are supposed to go to and that all my gauges work.
I have pretty much figured out what each wire goes to and from, however there is a tan with black stripe and a rubber connector with 5 wires that are not hooked to anything. I am thinking the rubber connector might be for adding a fish finder or something like that. Right now though neither of them are not connected to anything.
And on my Merc 40 HP motor there are two wires in the back of the motor not hooked up to anything. One is brown and the other brown with a white stripe. One has a male (brown) and the other has a female end.
When I started this wiring mess, none of the gauges worked. After looking and not finding anything particular to my pontoon I just started tracing wires and figured out how to get the fuel tank and volt gauges working. Although the volt gauge, when running goes to 16v right away so I think something is wrong there. The tach does not do anything, the speedometer does not work as I need to replace the hose to the thing in the back that goes in the water. Also, the depth gauge is not working as the transducer was broke off at the wires. I am going to try and solder the wires back together later on.
My pontoon is a 2001 Northwoods Regal 2023 and is 20 ft long. Includes a depth gauge but nothing else fancy. I am installing an aftermarket marine radio after I get all the other wiring figured out.
To wrap up, these are the questions I have so far...
1. Where does the round rubber plug (under the dash of the pontoon with 5 wires in it go to?
2. What is the brown wire under the dash with a eye connector connect to?
3. How can I tell if my tach is bad or just not wired correctly?
4. How can I tell if my volt gauge is working properly?
5. What are the brown (female connector) and brown with white stripe (male connector) at the back of the motor supposed to connect to? (Motor is a 40HP Merc)

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I will post some pictures soon so you all can see what I have and am doing.

Thanks

Here is a picture of one of my seats before I reupholstered it.

Here it is afterwards

Here are a couple more I have redone already.

Here are some wires in the pontoon that I do not know what they are for.

And the plug with I think 5 wires in it...

There is also a brown wire not shown in pictures in the pontoon side that has a connector to connect to a switch, but no idea what its for.

A couple wires at the back of the Merc 40HP engine that are not connected to anything...

This is what the voltmeter does with the key just in the on position and its the same after its started. Strange.

I hope someone can give me some advice to help with the unknown wires, where to connect them and what to do about my voltmeter.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you. I had already seen the second link which has helped me get the fuel tank and voltmeter gauges working. However not too sure my voltmeter is correct as it pings high when I turn the key to on before even starting it.
The first link is new to me and gives more diags I can do. Thanks or that.
Is it the ignition switch wire that gives the tach the signal or is the tach hooked to a wire from the engine?
