Hi all,

This is my first post on this forum. I'm in the process of purchasing a park model trailer home and Princecraft 21 foot pontoon boat. The trailer site is located on a small spring fed lake that is roughly only about 200 acres in size. The trailer park has a 10hp limit on the lake. I'm confident that the 10 HP motor (currently equipped) will be enough for puttering around the lake with my wife and two children. However, the trailer park is located only about 15 minutes away from Lake Huron and I would like to occasionally take the boat for cruises near the there. For that, my understanding is that I would need at least a 50HP motor to comfortably handle currents/weather for light cruising. I'm not going to be attempting any speed records.

My question is, how difficult it is to swap between motors if I do purchase a second, larger motor for the perhaps 2-3 seasonal trips to Lake Huron? Is this something a novice could handle, or would it require substantial rewiring?

Any insights are appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

I should add that the current motor is a Mercury 9.9hp. Thanks

First off....Welcome.  Glad to see a new poster.

Man, I thought I came up with some challenges.  I cant imagine swapping back and forth with out problems eventually showing up.  Is your current motor tiller steered?  Will the bigger one be tiller steered?
Maybe its just me, but I can see a 9.9 for emergency back up but would have problem with it as a primary.  But I do understand  your predicament with the lake limits.
Things that run through my mind are steering cables, fuel lines, how mounted to transom and things like that.
Please keep this updated on what you did and how it worked out.
The great thing about excruciating pain is....at least you know you are alive.
