Good advice Nick, Sea Foam can sometimes work wonders, in fact now I burn some in every tank of gas to keep the rings and chambers and carb clean.

If the motor has been sitting a ring could get hung up but there is a huge difference between your cylinder readings.  My mechanic friend said idealy you want 4% between cyliners. Do you have the plugs that were in it last time it was running? That can answer alot of questions if you have a bad cylinder. You should have a nice light toasted brown color at the base of the electrode. I know with the motors I looked at in my search for a new one once my friend saw a questionable reading he scoped the cylinder to see what caused the low reading. That takes a knowlegable guy but they can also tell you if it needs a rebuild or just a set of rings. Hopefully you just had a bad reading and the fuel treatment will help. Keep us posted .

Your electric motor corrosion looks just like what we deal with on our snowplow pumps. The only difference is we can see that in just a couple of years time. What we do is grease the seal real well  during reassembly just for added protection from the outside. Glad to see you you were able to just clean it up. I have been there done that in the middle of the night during a snow storm L.O.L !!!

shaun...now you're reminding me why i left the snowy north!  thx for the compression tips, i'll recheck the plugs for fouling and keep an eye on the compression. got my fingers crossed that things shape up after running some seafoam through it...

progress...

ordered some vinyl from PS this week to match the seats we plan to get.  I've been discussing options with a few upholsterers to have the sundeck done.  plan is to have a bolster ( think that's what you'd call it) around the sides and back edges like this...

but of course will match the cream/burgundy/taupe seats...

also picked up 4 sheets of aluminum for the rear skin on the railing and the underskin.

Got the railing skin cut and bent last night, should have them scuffed, primed, and painted by the end of this weekend.  Gotta get 'em mounted and get out on the lake!

maybe even get the underskin on this weekend too...

will post progress pics soon.

I think the bolsters are a good idea. Gives it a finished look and someone won't roll off if they fall asleep.

Got some laundry hung out to dry!  was a little windy, but after getting pieces cut i finally got them painted...  rustoleum sprays nice with a little thinning with acetone.

Got the rails painted too.  Terrible paint (Krylon from wallyworld), absolutely does not flow and sprays very poorly.  Can't find anything to thin it that doesn't make it clump and clog the sprayer.  I'd be done with this project by now with all the time i've spend cleaning and re-clogging that sprayer!

it floats!

Got the underskin installed Friday night, finished up some wiring Saturday and got it on the lake.  (no pics of the maiden voyage...)

it went FAST!  motor ran great, new prop made a real difference, and i think taking all the old heavy seats off, the polished pontoons, and the underskin made it FAST!

ok, not really fast, but "pontoon fast"...  our chase boat (had the neighbor come out and pace us just in case we broke down, etc...to give us a tow back) said we stayed between 23-24.

it was awesome - felt great to get this thing on the water and enjoy it.  Took it out and just cruised around at just under WOT for about an hour.  Motor seemed to run better as more of the sea foam went through it...maybe i'm just hearing things.

Had a lot of water splashing up over the underbelly tank.  don't like that - will put some nascar race tape around the skin and tank to seal it off - that stuff will last a season or so...  And i built a little nose cone for the front of the tank to deflect water away.  I think the flat front is pushing a lot of water and is forcing it up and over the top through the skin.  Will post some pics soon.

Also need to work on the charging system, i don't think it's working.  Any tips to trouble shoot and fix are appreciated.

and the tach...wasn't working either...or the speedo, or the water guage!  :)  lots to fix.

How you know the charging system isn't working? Was the voltmeter not working??? If the tach wasn't working, then I'd start with wiring from the motor to up front since your voltmeter is coming from that harness too. Do you have a VSR in the mix? Oh I see you got one of the OLD mercury's on there, those things tend to eat rectifiers. But do the testing specified in your manual, and you'll find the culprit pretty quickly.

Glad to hear you were finally able to hit the water. I know what a good feeling it is to finally take all your hard work for a cruiseClap  Sounds like you have a few bugs to work out but that is normal for most. Did you towel off those nice shiny logs after you pulled it out of the water ? I know I would have LOL  Again glad to hear you were on the water !!!

our "chase boat" snapped a couple pics.  After all the bugs are worked out. we'll get some some color on those sides.  either some traditional pontoon stripes, or some really sexy flames!

charging system wasn't working properly when we used it in vegas as i recall.  had to pull start it after a full day of cruising and radio a few times.  seemed to drain quickly throughout the day..

no VSR, but will look into rectifier during all other wiring checks. thx.

oh yea, forgot to mention how slick the bunk slicks were.  When i'd crank it up on the trailer that last few feet in vegas, the calcium deposits on the logs and the carpet on the bunks would bind so much i'd stand to the side in case the winch strap broke...

with those new slicks, it was the easiest load i've ever done.  one of the best things i've done on this build.

Cool...another trick is to back the trailer all the way in the water and wet all the carpet. Then pull up to the proper loading position and it will slide easier. Of course sounds like yours may slide off if you do this being they are slicker than greased lightiningLOL

How are all yall's sundecks secured?  I've got hinges for the back, but how do they stay latched when underway / trailering?  Seems like there are several varieties of latches out there, which ones do you like?

Hinges on the back.  60 lb 20 in spring/gas lift.  Nothing else on the water.   On trailer drop Bimini onto sundeck and secure Bimini rails to fence on mine.

Ouchhaven't posted in a while - been too busy enjoying the boat!

i've gotta post this adventure because it surprised me so much...i'm part surprised, and part humiliated - ok, mostly humiliated...

have a great outing with the neighbors... (sans chairs!)  My baby girl loves the boat!

We loaded the boat with ease - those bunks sure are slick...

i noticed as i pulled out that the boat needed about an inch to slide up tight to the stairs.  The launch is pretty steep, so i pulled up the launch and turned around to get the nose pointing down.

Even though i swung it wide, it was a tight turn, and i watched as the trailer wheel slowly crept up on the curb.  It rode the curb as i made the turn (still slow) and I watched in the mirror in slow motion as the wheel dropped off of the curb...and the boat bounced once and SLID OFF THE TRAILER!!!   Dead

the underdeck tank took most of the hit (on the bunk) - there was a healthy scrape on the back of the rt log, and the skeg took a hit too.  slight bend...Angry

i lifted it up onto a furniture dolly (great neighbors all came running with gear) and we limped it back to the water.  never believed at that slow speed it would have bounced off...Dead
