I have done a number of Google searches and have not found a clear answer to the question if LED lights placed under the edge of a pontoon boat is legal in NC or not.
I have seen some comments that some colors may be illegal....blue....red....yellow. But nothing definitive. Anyone know for sure?

POST UPDATE: Ok, so I made
a couple of phone calls and got some interesting information. The first
phone call was to the Coast Guard HQ that handles NC. I spoke with a gentleman there and what he
told me wasn’t really any big surprise. Basically, he indicated he didn’t care about LED lights
under a pontoon boat which is no surprise when you think about it because I
doubt the Coast Guard runs into a lot of pontoon boats period. However…..he
did highly recommend I call my local NC Wild Life Department and talk to them
as they are the ones that monitor the lakes and such. So I did. I got hold of a Major there that was very
forthright and pretty much cut to the chase. His concerns
with any lights was if they impaired the vision of me, the boat driver, or,
some other individual’s vision driving another boat. One thing he noted was they constantly are stopping
guys on lakes tearing along at night with their bright dock lights on and blinding
anyone around them. Having participated
in a number of night ops in the military I understood that very well. Once he
understood where the lights were going and no LED would be exposed to blind
someone, he basically had no problem with it. He did note
if they didn’t like what they saw, they would probably at most stop the individual
and give him/her a warning and tell them to turn off the lights. He plainly stated they were just concerned
about safety and not out to harass so basically if the lights are not an
impediment in any way…..go for it. Unfortunately
I forgot to ask about the light color….if that mattered. Now the
question is what light set do I get? |
