    Posted: 05/26/2011 at 1:55pm
Just purchased an 1988 24' Monark project.  Flooring was rotting & needed replaced along with carpet & seating.  We have stripped the top off in the past 3 days.  Planning on using fiberglass to replace floor, putting on durabak coating for floor, need to order seating next.  Also want to repaint the rail walls - am going to attempt to take off the vinyl on the sides - the pink & red just doesn't do it for me and really dates it.  Any hints on how to do that would be appreciated.

trying to get this all done by the end of June for the 4th of July weekend - we'll see!  This is a great forum - have already found lots of great ideas and tips!

If you're replacing the floor, what are you replacing it with?? I wouldn't recommend anything but CCA 7 ply and it doesn't need fiberglassing, in fact I wouldn't recommend it for weight and it would only trap water and hasten the rot. If you're going to apply durabak, apply it directly to the wood floor. Look in our tips section and other members rebuilds for removing old vinyl graphics from the fencing. Some seem to have success with a heat gun and scrapper.

i just use a razor paint scraper and mine came right off (then sanded to repaint...so the glue wasn't much of an issue.)  other talk about "airplane remover" - i'm not sure if it removes the whole airplane, maybe just the sticky parts...

I finally tried to take off the vinyl off the sides - waited for a sunny warm day and it just peeled off.  Yea!  So now it's just cleaning the residue glue off and getting it ready to paint.  After reading posts here I thought it would be so much harder.

And now going with the CCA 7ply for flooring - have a boat repairman with advice and decided against it.  Thanks Wildcat!

Time to order replacement furniture this week!
