Hi-

Just wondering... I have a 2 stroke 35 hp Merc Outboard and the last trip out I noticed that the water comes out at the bottom... I just had the water pump replaced and the water comes out of the hole like it is supposed to but I also noticed a spray of water towards the bottom.. I took it to the marina where the pump was put in and the guy said it was normal for some water to come out there as that is an exhaust as well....the motor ran perfect.....I had a 4 stroke before this so I didn't know that this would be happening.....

when you say towards the bottom do you mean through the prop or higher up on some models that have exhaust ports (like my Johnson 115) which is normal.

Those are idle exhaust relief ports. They allow the motor to idle better by releasing most of the exhaust through those holes, rather than it having to try and push it's way out the prop against the resistance of the water. So it's normal and nessesary. (It's also one reason smaller outboards with no through prop/hub exhaust are so loud. All the exhaust is released above the water.)
