I've been looking forward to fishing for a LONG time and to fish with my brother was GREAT. Having finally getting clearance to fish after Sept 18th it was nice. We went yesterday but neither one of us remembered to bring the camera LOL, but we had to fish from the banks of a slew as the county lakes were all closed (we should have checked that). Today we went to Sulligent Lake in Sulligent AL, about a 70 acre privately owned lake (only open Tues-Sat unless you're a member). We discovered a problem with the fuel line so didn't use the motor - just trolling motor. Brother caught a catfish and bream before lunch, and then I caught up with 2 bream after lunch. I had to wait until Monday as he's a pastor for a couple of churches in his area, so he rotates between them (small rural churches). I took the jon boat and turned it over to him. He was pretty stoked about it LOL.

View of the lake early before we launched.

View of the campground/Office from the lake

Brother Ivan fishing his first fish of the day

and his 2nd fish of the day (all before lunch), so far I'm skunked.

Finally after lunch, I'm fighting my 1st fish

Now I'm happy I've landed my 1st fish of the day

Whoohoo, tied my brother now with the 2nd fish of the day.

We didn't catch any more today, so went back, and worked on the motor and got it cranked (but then discovered another problem, need a fuel fitting as one is bad). It was a great day and 2 more days to go. Tomorrow we're going to another lake - Lamar County Lake about 15 miles from Vernon, AL. Its were my brother fishes the most, and it'll only cost us $3 for launch fee, instead of $3 a head at Sulligent Lake.

Looks like great fun!

Isnt it amazing how those little buggers will hit a lure as big as they are!

Also great fun on an unsophisticated fly rod with a Miss Prissy or little popper on the end.

Not too many things better than a fun day on the water.

Well we hit Lamar County Lake where he likes to fish for catfish, but we both got skunked. Think we both were just wore out from yesterday, so we did without lunch and fished a little longer without success and called it a day. We're going back to Sulligent Lake where we had success and fish a half day tomorrow then I'll head home, 4 hrs driving. I came out pretty good on giving him my jon boat. He ended up givig me his PS3 and several games, so I'm happy Big smile

Couple pics of Lamar County Lake outside Vernon, AL.

Brother looking at his camera. We had a good day of fishing even though we didn't catch anything. Talked about our dad and some of the fishing trips we'd spend with him when he was alive. My brother got to spend a lot of time fishing with him in his later years, so I was glad of that, and to hear some of the things I can just see my dad doing LOL. That man could find a fishing hole 4 miles deep into the woods nobody else would even know was there, then naturally made us hike with him so he could catch nice bass in a little bitty hole probably not 4 feet wide. More like a slough. I know southern boys know what a slough is, but our northern boys may not Wink. You can sure be surprised whats in them holes.

First fishing trip I remember was in a NE Missouri "Slough".  Lots of small yellow bellies.  I need to go back there and see if its still there.  That must have been around 58 to 60 years ago!! Wink

It is awesome that you got to go fishing with your brother! Hopefully you will get to go again soon.

I definitely know what a slough is as well.

Also makes me remember this place that my friend and I used to fish while in high school. He would threaten my life back then to not tell anyone where we went In the back of one slough there was a small opening just barely wide enough for his bass boat to fit through...don't think a pontoon would fit due to width. After trolling a ways and paddling part of the way it opened up into a large lake. Just had to watch the water levels to make sure you could get back out There were some monster bass back there. He is now a pro fisherman sponsered by National Guard.

After high school I've rarely been on the water until getting a boat of my own. Looking forward to getting the toon back on the water to do some fishing with the family.

Well that's a heck of a note to end our fishing trip on. I wasn't feeling too good last night and woke up sick to my stomach this morning. So drove home but it was still good. This morning in the hotel, I thought they paged me through the phone, I slapped at it and said "yeah" and then I discovered nobody called me. Looked at the clock and it was 2am, think I woke up every half hour after that. I am wore out and I'm so glad to be home in my own bed, but think I'm just gonna get a nap right here in my chair LOL, hopefully when I wake up I can tolerate something on my stomach.

Well 2nd trip back, we didn't expect to get together so quick. This time we went to Fayette County Lake just outside Fayette AL. It was cold this morning and with the winds between 10-15 wind chill was 39. But we bundled up and went for it. We thought it was kinda bad, but by noon it had warmed up to about 50 or so and winds had died down a little. I had caught 2 bream by then and skunking my brother. Then the winds REALLY picked up to about 20 gusting to 30 it seemed and then it got COLD. But catfish started biting finally. I caught one then my brother finally got 2. So we still had fun. Ok so some pics for Day 1 of 3.

Fayette County Lake one end and the next pic is the other end of it - 60 acres (according to records) but doesn't look that big to me

My first catfish after catching 2 bream

My brother with his first catfish of the day

and him again only I caught some action in these

End of day 1, we couldn't take the icy cold blasts of air and 2:40 we headed in. Now to plan day 2 (dressing warmer is definitely in the works) LOL

Great to see you having a good time with your brother Charles. Life is short & sharing good times with family members is something we all need to do more of IMO. Good to see you enjoying yourself after all that work on the pontoon along with health issues. Hope you have many more good times in the future.

If I get back down to Nashville for 2012 Fan Fair with my son, maybe I can take a day off & you can take me fishing & show me HOW its done. I haven't caught a fish in so long I'm not use HOW to do it anymore. LOL

I've been so busy with my son's music career along with having some health issues myself I have NOT touched my bass boat OR the pontoon boat in over 2  months. I'm still trying to get the privacy room finished & ready for next year.

BTW His first CD just got published NATIONALLY on radio stations throughout the entire country. Over 1200 stations all total. The "featured" song is called: Looking For a Change. Aren't we ALL looking for a change in some way or the other? Better health, better money, better time to enjoy ourselves, better fuel economy for our engines, better boats, etc etc? LOL

Well we got skunked pretty bad today. Got plenty of bites, but got a lot of broke lines too for the effort. If we could get on the water just as it gets light out, it wouldn't be too bad, but by 10am winds start kicking some and by 1 pm it was howling again and cold. Weird thing was, we got back to town and it was as nice as it could be - go figure. Go anywhere near water and winds are making chops out there LOL. We decided to do something different tomorrow - gonna play some games on his PS3. Plus gonna take over payments on two of his toys

Well I figured rather than start a new thread, why not just continue the story with a new date LOL.  We're back at it again at Lamar County Lake in Vernon, AL. Today he skunked me really bad - 3 to 0. He was using chicken livers and I was using prepackaged threadfin shad from wally world. Even the catfish know the difference between fresh livers and chinese junk food LOL. I had one or two hits and that was it while he had at least a dozen or more. All of our fishing was done by 9am (we started by 7 am), but we fished until 1pm, just didn't get any more bites after 9am. It started out a little cool by was up to 90 today.

Course, I got pics Of COURSE - after all - I didn't catch NOTHING. I had ONE good hit and wouldn't you know it'd come when somebody calls me on the cell phone. I turned my phone off after that LOL.

Catfish 1 action shot

Action shot 1 of 3 above of fish 1 of 3

Catfish 1 action shot 2

Catfish 1 action shot 2

Catfish 1 in the boat for my brother

Fishing pole is bent for catfish #2 on the line

and catfish #2 on the way into the boat (dadgumit - fiddlesticks) LOL

Yep, he's got 2 to my NONE

Even big bream was wanting some fresh liver

Yep, so after he lands fish #3, I took all my processed minnows/shad and dumped them and switched to liver, but by then, we wouldn't get any more bites. Its like somebody sounded the horn signaling the end of breakfast (and lunch). Oh well, tomorrow we fish a different lake and this one will be closed tomorrow.

Yep, course on some lakes, its a no no to cut up bream but I'm gonna make SURE I got worms tomorrow LOL and some nightcrawlers. My mistake was going into the store forgetting that in AL they smoke just about everywhere (still) and I quit smoking in 87 (right after my last undercover narcotics job). That had me choking so bad I had to back out and let the brother do the transactions. Sure looking forward to getting my bass boat done so I can fish more often. Big smile  Yep, no more buying junk that looks good to me but NOT to catfish LOL, but I knew better than to buy that stinky red ball stuff ConfusedConfusedConfusedDead, jeeeezzz can't get that stuff off your hands and makes you want to puke every time you want to snack or take a drink OuchLOLConfused (mixed emotions) CryLOL

Well we started off bad today, or at least my brother did. He got halfway and the rear end dropped out of his truck, so I had to go get him and the boat and we stopped at a local city park pond for a little fishing. He hooked a bass but it pulled his jig loose at the bank. Like yesterday, 9am hit, and its like the buffet got pulled from the line LOL. Gonna hurt for my brother on a fixed income. He just bought that 2005 Titan truck last year with 94k miles and only put 2k on it (local driving only) before the rear end dropped.  Well tomorrow I'll pick him up at 5am and be on the water before 6, will pull the boat with my truck. So rest of the day will be visiting relatives in the area. Saw some really nice bass in the city pond though from 1 to 5 or 6 pounds. But really needed my 4 wheel scooter, my hips were killing me to far to walk much from the parking lot.  I'm looking forward to tomorrow of even up the score and not get skunked this time LOL

Ever have those days when we should have just stayed in bed? It was one of those days. Started off pretty good, got started a 4am and got to McDonalds to get us breakfast at 5:15. Got to his house and hooked up and that's when we discovered Mickey D's didn't give me ALL our breakfast (only one biscuit - not 2) so had to go back to Mickey D's and get the missing biscuit - 3 miles out of our way and 15 minutes wasted. Get to the lake office for permits and find out NO minnows (all frozen overnight AGAIN), NO nightcrawlers and NO ice. So we had to go back to town to get ice. 30 minutes wasted at least. Brother forgets his life jacket so he borrowed one, having left his gear in the truck that broke down. At least they came down from 1300 for a rear end to now 300 approx, lots better. Finally get on the water and we're fishing but I keep smelling this terrible funky smell. Oh yeah, brother had left his tub of chicken livers on the boat for 3 HOT days and they are RIPE ConfusedConfusedOuchDeadDeadLOL.  I FINALLY convinced him to dispose of them. I should have told him DOWNWIND Confused  cause those suckers floated like you know what and smelled worse than ever. We had to pull anchor and depart.

Only problem is every time I turned my head to say something to him, I'm about to barf cause I keep smelling that nasty stuff. FINALLY found out what it was. He had used a rag to clean up a mess from yesterday and now its BEHIND MY SEAT - now got rid of that nasty thing, I can breathe fresh air now without trying to barf. I'm catching fish and I'm tied overall finally (no pictures I forgot the camera for the morning session). Then he sets a hook on a fish and immediately one of his rods goes sailing into the air and lands 15 feet away into the lake - his luck at first bad was that I managed to kinda catch it with my line to stand it up, so we could see it proturding after 4 feet down, so he finally manages to hook it after he lost his fish and gets his OLD zebco rhino outfit back. Finally we head in for lunch, more ice and fresh chicken livers.

Ok back on the lake, this time with a camera and we're doing good (or I was) UNTIL the game warden showed up on the opposite bank and is eyeballing us with his binoculars so I wave and he hollers over to show our lifevests. I show mine and brother says OH NO, I forgot mine. OOOOPS, 30 minutes later brother has a 100 buck ticket for no lifevest in the boat. He was feeling pretty down and out and wanted to just go home. I said no, we're not going to end our trip on a low note, gotta be a high note. So back out with a borrowed vest and fishing again in another spot. So far I'm up 7 fish to his one but now the tables are turned and suddenly his catching one after another and I'm missing the hook set on mine. We lost count and looks like my camera didn't catch all the fish we caught. It did catch all my afternoon fish, just not his after 3:15 pm. We quit fishing at 4:30 and packed up happy to end it on a good note. So here's a few pictures.

So not gonna post all the pics, got about 3 times more than what's posted. But just enough to show we had a good fishing day even though problems otherwise.

Brother said it was the best day of actually catching fish we've had. We tried to recall how many we actually caught and was hoping the camera caught it all so have to venture a guess of close to 20 or so. Bull Bream, bass, catfish and crappie so the only thing we didn't catch was a carp out of that lake LOL

Wow, it looks like you guys had a good time out there catching fish! I hope you kept a few, and cooked them up. When the weather straightens up, I want to get my little fishing boat out, and hit a couple of small lakes. (more like large ponds) We also have a very shallow river here that one can walk with waders, but I like taking a small boat with a trolling motor on it to catch crappies.

Myself I never keep them, I'm more of a catch and release guy. The tornadoes in the area has devasted the area around here and there are chemical drums in all the local lakes so I wouldn't eat anything out of them. Even found the whole top of a shed in the lower end of the lake.  I gotta remember to take pictures of the vehicle/boat graveyard that I pass by when I go fishing with him. There must be litterally a couple thousand vehicles out in this rural area. There's some that just isn't worth trying to haul out of the deep sided mountains including parts of houses and tin roofs or warehouses. It's littering the sides of where the path of it took, really wild looking. Lots of homes have been boarded up or left to rot, some are rebuilding after tearing their old homes down and some are managing to repair the damage and live in parts of their homes. That part of AL though seems to be a tornado magnet over the years though.

Went for another round of fishing with the brother Thursday. It was suppose to be Wed and Thurs but he forgot a appt with doc for Wed, so I sat in hotel room. Thurs we got going at 5:30am and on the water by 6am but he forgot the trolling motor because he was so excited about the brand new Coleman 5hp 4 stroke I got him. Took him a bit to get use to it and the kill switch. He remembered to pull it loose to kill the motor, but ALWAYS forget to hook it back up to crank it LOL. He'll learn eventually but not having the trolling motor caused us some problems getting in the right spot. Think he's decided the cajun anchor is the way to go.

But we did manage to catch a couple of fish plus a surprise. Surprise was what our anchor got latched onto and brought to the surface - a brand new rod and reel, but rod tip was broken off. We surmised this happened by laying down rig and a cat took it overboard (cause I've done that before).

We each caught one but mine was bigger so I won the day.

couple action shots of my brother catching his little cat

but he's happy to get him in the boat

couple action shots of my fish

and my nice eating size 2lb catfish, but both released without harm this time around. Probably be Sept before we hit it again, just too hot for us in our condition of health, so we were done by 11am.

Grew up catching those critters in North West IOWA.  Love the little beggars- tasty.  Now in colorado we are looking at losing all the fish in plains lakes due to massive draw downs and will end up with mud holes a couple feet deep.  Have to start over or move.  Good fishing to all.              Wink
