    Posted: 08/19/2013 at 11:08am
Hey all,

Just joined the forum recently as I started looking at pontoon boats, My wife and I have been on a few family vacations where we've rented pontoons and also gone out with some friends on a pontoon that we've rented. Unfortunately, the rental pontoons are usually pretty junky and low powered. Either way, we wanted to get one to enjoy more frequently without having to pay $300 a day for rental.

We started looking for used pontoons, but couldn't find anything we wanted for a decent price. I wanted a tritoon with a 150hp. Needless to say, that setup was a lot of money.

I started reading these forums and realized that I could build a boat over the winter. So we found a new pontoon chassis for sale and bought it.

Here she is with the fencing strapped down. Lucked out and was able to get some fence as well

Image

Here she is loaded up and hooked up to her future tow vehicle.

Here she is with the fencing laid out to see how it will look. It will sit like this for a while as my wife are wanting to build this boat without using a credit card or dipping into our savings, so we will build it bit by bit over the winter. We need to get some carpeting for the front 2/3rds of the boat first and then we'll get the rub rail bolted down, but that will wait for a month or so.

I look forward to learning more here and getting to know people

The fencing is setup with center front and rear gates along with a port side gate as well. We're looking to go with dual front facing lounge benches and dual rear facing lounge benches along with a co captains chair on the port side but even with the captains chair.

Here is the layout we're planning on doing.

That is going to be an awsome boat. Great find. That is going to be my next boat, tritoon with at least a 150hp. Can't wait to see this come together.

Thanks.

Good product Smile

I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks to get the fence railing bolted down and the threshold installed. I believe we will be getting a Bimini top for Christmas.

After that it is a waiting game until we are ready to purchase the furniture $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I feel ya...the helm is always an expensive piece once you get it loaded with all the goodies, unfortunately some times you can't set it permanently until you have the seating Cry

Definitely not looking forward to the furniture part. I'm actually contemplating purchasing furniture in 2 different phases. Phase 1 would allow me to get everything set and make sure it fits properly. The 2nd phase would finish up the furniture. This would allow me to stick to the goal of paying for this boat as we build it. The motor may be a whole other story though. One minute I'm modest and say just get an older 150hp 2 stroke, the next minute I'm looking at brand new 150's

Only time will tell.

You might consider the new merc 150 four stroke , I know it's a lot of money @$10,000 but it's a brand new engine with full warranty...just something to consider!

Wow, which one are you referring to for 10k? At that price although a lot of $, it still quite a bit cheaper than other 4 strokes.

Nevermind, Just did a little searching and found the 4stroke Mercury. Guess I haven't looked to in depth for motors yet. That really isn't too bad of a price in comparison to some a few years older and no warranty in other brands.

+ or - a bit but that's about right for the new 150 around here... Something I've noticed is the mercurys are the cheapest outboards on the market, I priced a 115 e-tec for my old toon a long time ago and was quoted at $13,000 installed.. That wasented to bad but you can get a bigger merc for the same money.. I'm good with this because I'm a big mercury fan...last year the boat show had a 150 mercury verado for $9,850 that was a great price. I'm just hoping they run some good sales on the 250+ HP verados next month..

Thanks. It wasn't the original design I was planning on as I was figuring on the normal sundeck back area design with square fencing. With getting this fencing, I had to change the design plans. The wife likes the idea of having a "co-captain's" chair for her to sit in while we're cruising around. I am finding that it is somewhat annoying trying to get the layout design when you have a limited selection of bench seat lengths to work with. The corner pieces and the lounge back pieces are pretty standard, but it would be nice to be able to order exact bench lengths to make a "perfect" fit for furniture layout. As far as I know, there is only one company that will do the complete custom dimensions, but they are a little more pretty salty on price from the quote that I have gotten.

I hear ya on the bench lengths, your very limited on sizes as well as colors unless you want to really spend some money. The last time I figured up the cost of the furniture I wanted it was well over 5 grand, witch is ridicioulous but I guess you have to consider how much we would be paying for brand new 2014 southbays from a dealer, we will definitely come out cheaper building our own.

Made it out this last weekend to start mounting some of the fence railing. I got the side holes drilled and the fence mounted, but I'm going to wait on the corner section hole drilling until we get some furniture in it to help firm up the layout. Right now, I can have the fence attached, but still slide it forward and backward to adjust where at on the deck I want the playpen.
Here's the only pic I have of drilling the holes. switched to my corded drill after about 2 holes. Much quicker than a battery powered drill.

got some more stuff done today. I had a friends help so took advantage of having some extra muscle to get the front rub rail installed.
Also got the doors riveted on, corner caps installed, bimini frame assembled, and the floor layout taped

tucking carpet under rub rail (my buddy, not me)

bimini frame up. There were already holes in the fence rail from a previous bimini top. I'm really hopin that I can just use these and not have to drill new holes. Couldn't put the top all the way up though due to truss clearances.

Tape layouts. I thought the bench bases an such were only 17" from the railing as far as floor mounting, They're actually 21" out with a 27" total jut out. That's what the bench areas look so narrow. I didn't feel like retaping for proper width.
