Here are some pics of our 1974 Starcraft that my fishing buddy and I got. It is pretty much a disaster and I plan on getting real dirty. The motor is a 1974 Mercury 65 hp. The boat sat uncovered for 2 years under a tree and the interior is pretty much shot. The transom is a total loss as is the flooring and the wiring is 4 different harness"s cobbled together. We were going to restore it but the port side console is gone. We plan on fixing it into a simple fishing boat. We are going to put new Pontoonstuff marine plywood on the floor and rewire it with a kit from EZACDC. We"ll also add lights, maybe LED"s, and a live well with pump and wiring from EZACDC. We bought this treasure back in November and have been pressed for time to work on it so please bear with us. Edited by dahogman |

We completely gutted the boat. The transom and floor came out in pieces. We sold the motor on ebay for $380. We bought a 1989 Johnson 35 hp for it and that is what is going on the boat. We hope that will be enough motor, the boat isn"t very wide and is only a 16 ft. We had to drill out more rivets and screws than you can count. The boat has been painted at least 4 times and all the screw heads were full of paint. The flotation foam consisted of 1 inch styrofoam insulation for under vinyl siding stacked up under the floor.

You know, I"ve been meaning to ask him about that. I"m starting the process on my jon boat (got most of the materials). I"m keenly interested in his transom, stringers and fiberglassing he"ll be doing, plus to see what PontoonStuff materials he"s going to be using.

Well I finally got boat stripped down to bare aluminium. Boat had 4 & 5 layers of different types of paint. Used 2 gallons of stripper to strip boat and lots and lots of scraping. I"ll try and get some pic"s of transom and of boat, little overwhelmed with other things and work is going alot slower than I planned. Very little free time right now and I have to pick my battles. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by dahogman |

Well, I stripped boat down to bare aluminium again. Repainted with Interlux VC Performance Epoxy and it looks good so far.

Hey there dahogman. even though this site is about pontoons I"m proud to see you doing this rebuild. I have been looking for a 15 to 16 foot boat to rebuild. I have found two, just waiting on the owners to give me a price. Keep us posted and pictures. Thanks, dahogman |

Here are some pics, such as they are. I ran out of time and didn't get the lights on the trailer. I had a little trouble getting the axle assembly back on and wound up resquaring the trailer. The trailer looks a little gray in spots as I did not clean it for the pics and it is covered in dust from sanding and grinding.

Well I got the trailer lights on, ran the wires thru the frame like they are supposed to. Old wires were just tied to frame and tucked into every crack and crevice. I also installed bunk boards, treated 2x4"s with marine carpet and stainless steel bolts. I only carpeted the top half of boards to allow for faster drying time after trailer is used. I got boat back on trailer, no small task for a one legged guy working by himself. Boat has also been completely stripped inside and is ready for paint. I do have to clean the center of the floor where everything accumulated during the lengthy stripping process. Five layers of paint and glue were stripped off. |

I bought my first boat in 1969, 14 ft starcraft, my second boat in 1974 was this same boat. Loved it and caught my first stripper out of it, 38 inch long. Floors were always a piece of stuff and I replaced mine after about 5 years along with all the plywood in the seats. Sure had some good times as you will. ENJOY.

I got the transom in today. I made it with 3/4 Treated Marine plywood from www.Pontoonstuff.com I measured and measured and measured and then cut it out with a jigsaw. I then glued and screwed it. I then applied 2 coats of resin to each side and 4 coats of resin to the edges. I let the transom cure in my Garage pretty much all summer. I put transom in boat and then lowered front of boat until the transom was plumb, I then leveled boat side to side on the trailer. I checked everything twice and started drilling the holes for the mounting bolts. I got lucky and hit all eight of the existing thru hull holes for the transom. I hit them dead solid perfect the first time, I was more than amazed that I could do this on a 35 year old boat. I decided to call it a day after I got the bolts all in and tight, no sense ruining a good day.

Hey, this is the people I bought my pontoon from and if this were close I would be all over it but its a 1974 Starcraft and I think pretty close to you and it has lots of nice adds such as a jackplate for the engine. For some reason it will not let me like but the item number is 120478428216 and it only up to 106 buck and it wont go much higher. It ebay. Well I got the transom and rear motor rest completed today. I still need to do a little touch up painting but the final asembly is now complete on the transom. I used all new stainless steel screws, bolts, washers, and eyebolts. I replaced the old tow eyelets with stainless steel eyebolts as the originals were badly corroded. I don"t like the looks of the bolts on the rear motor rest as they were drilled crooked when the boat was built new in 1974. I reused the original holes and you can see in previous pics that they were crooked. The motor will pretty well cover them up though. I used nearly a whole tube of silicone between the new motor rest and the aluminium so it should be sealed up pretty well. I can"t say I"m thrilled with the way it looks right now but maybe after I clean up inside and touch up paint it will be better. |

I think it looks fine Eric. Wouldn"t worry at all about the bolts, cause you"ll never notice them once the motor"s mounted. That"s gonna be a sharp rig when you get done.

That will actually be pretty easy except for all the cutouts in the bow area. The floor is only 5 ft across so I"ll use the existing aluminium runners and use self tapping screws on the edges and on those runners. I"ll put floor in, in 4 ft sections, dry fit and then take out and attach pieces together from the bottom. I"ll then put carpet on deck on the floor of my garage and then put floor in boat in one piece.

Got started on the floor today. I got the floor fitted and everything went pretty well. I made tabs to put on the bottom of the decking to hold the stringers plumb. The stringers are held in place by the tabs until I get the screws in them. If you don"t use the tabs the stringers will tend to bend over from the weight of the decking. They lose their strength when bent over, they should be plumb for maximum strength. I measured every 5 inches and transferred measurements to cardboard. I then connected the dots for the outline of my floor. The bow area was the toughest as I had a lot of ribs to go around. I used a lid from a Spaghetti sauce bottle as a pattern for the cutouts for the ribs. I now need to put in console and storage compartments so I can layout the seat bases. Then I take everything out and put the carpet on. I"m going to take decking out and put carpet on each piece separately. This will make any type of maintenance or repairs easier as each piece will be able to be removed separately. The decking is the Marine plywood sold by Pontoonstuff, great stuff. Edited by dahogman |

I had to re-read that a few times to understand the tabs and then the light bulb finally came on - thanks for explaining that, but I sure would have like to had photo-documented just a tad better. Ok now in the front, I see what appears to me the floor seems to slope in the bow so that you had to notch to let the stringers protrude, but not so in the aft section. Can you explain that part of it as to why that is?

I"m going to take more pics when I put it back together. I want to take the pics with carpet on to add contrast in the pic"s. The tabs are hard to see because I made them with the same plywood as the deck. The rear portion is pretty much level, there is a flat area on top of the ribs along the edges for flooring. The bow portion is level with the rest of the boat. The slope is because the bow of the boat rises in the front, thus giving the illusion of the floor sloping.

Ahh, the illusion effect, ok, that explains it. Yeah, it took me a bit the first time to see the tabs you were referring to.

I took the bow section out to finish it before laying out the floor plan. You can see on the cardboard where I laid out a grid. I got a old piece of cardboard and squared it up as best I could. I then cut it to the same width as the widest part of the section I was plotting out. I then found the center point and drew a line front to back on center. I then laid out lines every 10 inches side to side. I then measured side to side every 10 inches in the boat, this is how far the ribs are apart on center. I transferred those measurements to cardboard. I made sure the halfway point on each measurement fell on the center line thus keeping both sides equal. I used the lid from a big bottle to form my cutouts where the ribs would protrude from under the floor. I cut the final measurements out of the cardboard and put it in the boat. I then used a marker to make final adjustments to cardboard. I pounded the cardboard with a rubber mallet on the stringers. This left an impression in the cardboard so I would know where they were. I made my final cuts in the cardboard and then put it on my plywood and traced around it with a marker. I cut the plywood out with my jigsaw and test fitted it in the boat. I used some old aluminium I had from some door slides to make some braces for under the very front where there are no stringers in the boat. I made two 12 inch braces and screwed and glued them on the bottom using all purpose water proof adhesive and stainless steel screws. Probably not the best way to do it but I got it really close.
