Hello all,

I'm pretty new here and i'll let you all know I lack the funds to do as an amazing job as I have seen so many due on this site, but we all come from different walks of life and some people have big money to spend, and others have limited funds. In my opinion you can still make things look nice with the limited funds, and perhaps some day once I have a little money I can put the money into it that I really want to.

So i'll start off by saying I picked this boat up about 5 years ago. I paid $750 dollars for the boat, trailer and motor. An unbelievable buy, but you should have seen it. floor was rotten, all furniture was rotten, and it was just a mess. I replaced the floor originally and that was all I had the funds to do at the time. I now have some time on my hands and would like to take a month to make it look a little better this year. for now i'm going to be replacing the console, painting the railing, and getting a snew bimini top. I'll probably have some questions on a few things so i'm so glad you guys can all help me with this.

The floor still seems to be in decent shape from when i installed it about 5 years ago so i believe i'm going to let it go at least for now. I'm not getting so deep into the project that I can't easily remove the railing when I have money to redo everything, or redo it enough to sell it and buy my dream boat.

Does anyone have any solutions to get rust stains off of carpet???

I have these drains put in the bottom on the back of the toons. I'm not positive if they were there from the maufacturer or if they were hillbilly rigged in at a later date. i am taking on water in the toons but i'm pretty sure its not all from here. i'll be pressure testing these once I jack up the pontoons off the rail of the trailer and checking them with soapy water. can I just jb weld any pin holes I find or should I weld them? I'm not great with welding aluminum, but i do have a buddy that may help me for a 6 pack.. who am i kidding.. an 18 pack.

Any thoughts on a possible kicker motor transom? the pontoon sticks out about 18" past the floor of the deck so i'm wondering if i can attach something between the deck and existing transom for a kicker?

I am sure you could figure a way to add a kicker motor as there is many diffrent brackets available....my thought is invest that money in your big motor, so you don't need the kicker...LOL...Transom really looks like it needs redoing, IMO!

grimmjj, regarding your  issue with welding aluminum - I myself and not a welder thanks to this forum, I disovered Durafix which works basically like soldering.  There are other brands out there that work in a similar fashion.  I ended up ordering some some off eBay called Weld Wizard and have been pretty satisfied with it.

thanks for the tip on the welding stuff.. I want to install a kicker motor because many of the lakes in my area are 9.9 hp limit and im debating just switching out motors depending on which lake or installing a kicker motor. The way its looking i may just try to find a motor that i can hook up to the same steering and throttle hook up. What's your thoughts?

Ok gotta you...steering should not be an issue as many steering linkage parts are available to hook kicker to main motor....throttle and shift cables may not be so easy!

Get your butt busy...This forum has helped me stay on track, because I feel I need to post my progress to let you guys know what's going on....I try to do little something every day....I started my project about 2 months ago and I'm fairly pleased with my progress, as I only work on it after 4 or 5 and on weekends! When you paint rails and fence, be sure and use a self etching primer...a cheap paint sprayer will work as well...its probaly cheaper than buying every rattle can in town...LOL....Hope this helps!

lol. Its tough to work on it when its a 30 minute drive to get to it every day. Im also working a swing shift schedule which puts a damper on things. Im going down in the morning before I get to work so ill have about 4 more hours on it. Then in a couple days ill have another day and a half off to work on it. Lol.. Thanks for the motivation!!!!! I need to be on the water..

I forgot my phone today but I got all the railing off and 1/2 of the railing painted. I also got the console off. I need a new steering cable. Is there a bunch of different styles of steering cables or are they pretty much the same? I dont think I can fix the one I have and it appears to be frozen up. Wednesday I plan on jacking up the pontoon off the trailer and checking for leaks. Then pressure washing the floor. I think the carpet is going to be fine. I came across a deep cycle battery made for a home battery bank. Its huge and appears to be 300Ah from what I can read. Im going to need a deep cycle charger for this. Im thinking that's how the last battery died. I think i fried it by charging to long.. I have also changed lower until oil and greased any fittings I can find on it.

Money planning on spending
Bimini top
Aluminum patch for bottom of boat
Wood and vinyl for redoing captains chair
new steering cable but need help on info if I have to buy new wheel assembly also.

Your wheel should work with new steering system....most older pontoons have rotary sysytems like PS sells!

where can I find just the steering cable? I found the whole steering assembly for $179 but cant seem to locate just the cable itself. I have the wheel, wheel assembly and all that.
If you can find it let me know.

I am sure you could just find a cable...However IMO, I would replace whole system as it may be difficult to find exact right cable, if your cable is bad or fairly hard to turn, just replace the whole darn thing....there has been several diffrent methods of attaching cable to steering unit over the years and finding the exact right one from a paticular company may be tough...if your cable is orginal to boat is has over 30 years of crusted up grease in cable and rotary unit that can not be cleaned! Hope this helps!

Teleflex QC II, part number SSC61XX, where XX is the length in feet. I needed a 16' cable, so mine is SSC6116. This seems to be a pretty universal cable, I got mine for a little over $100 from Amazon.

great news. There was nothing wrong with my steering cable. The problem was the part on the motor that the steering cable screws into. It was so hardened with grease I couldn't even pull the steering cable out of the motor. After I wiped all the old grease off used some fine sandpaper to clean it up I regreased the zero fittings with some mobile one and it freed it right up. Happy to save some money one that. I pressure washed the carpet. Its in great shape. There is some rust stains I cant really pressure wash off. Anyone have any ideas for removing rust stains?

Nex step is jacking up the toons. Hopefully tomorrow. Pictures will be posted soon.

You can try some thing like CLR but I really doubt you will get rust out of carpet.  Depending on what you use you might even bleach the carpet.  How deep is it in?  Perhaps you could take some scissors and "trim" the tips off?
Feel free to contact me for help on your project!

today i was able to put 1/2 the railing back up. i was also able to mount my new steering console. I have a bunch of wiring to do yet and I need to buy some new stickers and some graphics. Does anyone know where I can get some graphics other than pontoonstuff? I mean I like the websites graphics but I can only find one style. I dont want graphics that other people have, or I would like some kind of variety.. Hmm... This might require some thinking. Maybe ill just try painting my own graphics.

on a side note I got most of the rust stains out with the pressure washer, but I used clelr and a scrub brush and got almost all of it out. Great comment on the clr. It did good.

Nice progress grimmjj!  Keep it rollin!  As far as the graphics go, I found some on ebay.  If you want completely custom then I would find a good sign shop and go and set down with them and design something "one off". Of course this is probably the most expensive way but if you want custom then it is about the only way.  Ebay has some car graphics that will work on pontoons.  At least it wouldn't look like other pontoons! Just read reviews before ordering, as always.

Good luck and keep up the good work!

tomorrow is picture day for the pontoon. I'll be showing off what I have done so far. Mind you while many of these things aren't the greatest, simply because I dont have a great amount of funds im doing the best with what I have. I will also be taking photos of how I end up jacking up the pontoon to check for leaks. Im actually dreading that part. But its all for the greater good.

heres some pictures and i have some new problems i may need help with..

I built this console. I I have everything working right, but I have 1 issue. My voltage meter may be fried. As I was hooking everything up I accidently was tightening bolts down on the battery and sparked the + and - together. I've done this before to batteries and have never destroyed them. I know its not good, but I dont think its too horrible. Anyways before I did that the voltage meter said about 12.56 volts. I sparked the + and - together (i pray I didnt ruin anything) with the socket wrench and now the voltage meter is reading over 20 volts. I hooked it up to a battery charger and it reads 15.5 volts roughly. i'll fiddle with it more, but i'm wondering if i fried something in the board and now its reading funny. I hook up the lights, gps/fish finder, and everything else and it all works.

Steering column installed on the boat. (the wire you see is the gear shifter and throttle.

this side seems to look pretty decent .

a picture of it from the side.

picture of the carpet after the 1st pressure washer round.

Now for the bad. I hooked up the battery. Lights work, nice and bright. GPS works, voltage meter did work at about 12.56V but now it says 1 which i believe is reading over 20 volts (could be the meter, could be something up with the battery) the meter I have goes from 5-20 volts. i'll get a real meter and test it next time I go down to find out exactly whats up with that.

The major issue of this second. I hook up the engine, turn the key, nothing. thought maybe the battery is dead. Hook up the battery charger (trickle charge) just to see if I can get power to the motor. Nothing. not a click, a sound, not a click. completely nothing. Where should I start? meter voltages to the engine? i'm unclear how to proceed. Maybe I should sand the battery hook ups. The are copper and have been out in the weather for a couple years so they have that dark brown color. Maybe that could be an issue? i'll look at it more later. I couldnt get the boat jacked up cause the rain stopped me. blah on the rain. I need to get this think done!!!!!

the motor ran perfectly 2 seasons ago with no problems.

there was a loose wire on the ignition. That was the problem. Everything is working well. I'll be posting photos tomorrow. I also came across a newer evinrude 9.9 with electric start for 100 bucks. it it needs a little work but i believe it was a great buy. Good compression, and it appears i can hook up everything the same as the 35 i got. Since most lakes around me are 9.9 i may be swapping motors from time to time. Hooking everything up is going to be a snap it appears.
